This morning at about 8:36am, SaveNewporters Joey Maioriello and Erin Hendricks and others reported a helicopter circling the area near the 29th Street area, over the ocean. Reports were that rescuers had located what appeared to be a lifeless body about 100-200 yards offshore, and loaded it directly onto an Orange County Sheriff’s boat, with both Newport Lifeguard boats also …

This morning, just after 9:30am, it was raised for the fifth time, in honor of the upcoming 4th of July holiday. …

Councilman Kevin Muldoon joins Mayor Diane Dixon in Demeaning Police

Kevin Muldoon taking the Oath of Office

As many readers know, Mayor Diane Dixon is running for an Assembly Seat. What many readers don’t know, is just how dirty politics can get when it comes to spending your tax dollars for personal campaigns. Dixon recently proposed adding an additional two police officers, which the police chief has repeatedly refused to ask for– even when asked to ask …

Three Thirty Three Has their Final Last Call

Last night, legendary restaurant 3 Thirty 3, served its last batch of fish tacos, and their final martini.  PCH’s most visible place with a beautiful view– which always seemed so busy– has closed its doors after 15 years of memory-making, fun, and public reminders about your friends birthdays. But fret not, the owner isn’t going anywhere.  Jeff Reuter will still …

Dixon Proposes to Add More Police– but Even the Police Don’t Want It

Last year was an incredibly low crime year in Newport Beach– a city known already for its low crime rates.  As we look at the closed out numbers, we’ve seen a reduction in crime across the board, and two of the last three years have been the “lowest crime rates in the history of Newport Beach”. But last council meeting, …

Wedge History Beam Rescued, Thanks to Fast-Acting Councilman

Yesterday’s news of the Wedge Lifeguard Fire was a sad one, not just for the memories made on and near the lifeguard stand, and not just because someone would do this, but also because some of surfing and the Wedge’s most famous departed names were etched into the lifeguard stand itself, including Knox Tiernan, Gene Peterson and Brad Honda, and …

Wedge Lifeguard Station Lost to Arson

Early this morning, at 3:26am, an arsonist (or perhaps more than one) began to set fire to the Wedge lifeguard stand.  Within minutes, the blaze was roaring. At 3:41am, the fire department was called, and arrived shortly thereafter to extinguish what was left of the lifeguard stand. As you can imagine, the city doesn’t have a bunch of lifeguard stands …
