Del Mar Opening Day Tomorrow: Wednesday the 17th!

First, we hope that the more controversial issues surrounding horse racing are resolved quickly.

But second: Opening Day in Del Mar kicks off Wednesday at 11:30am for it’s 80th summer season, and along with it, it brings a 10-race program!

It’s a long haul in both directions, and while some people choose to drive, the most popular (and fun!) method of transportation definitely seems to be AmTrak.

Long known for its tradition of Fantastic Hats, Opening Day costs between $15 and $30 to attend, and is located at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, CA 92014 (https://www.dmtc.com/season)

The Hat Contests carry a prize in a $5,000 prize giveaway, split between five categories: Best Racing Theme, Most Glamorous, Most Outrageous, Best Fascinator, and Best Flowers.  There’s no fee to participate, and all entrants will receive two free admission passes to return to the races!

While the hat contest has roots back to 1937 on the very first day open, it was not an officially recognized contest until 1995.

“The Party”– the famous party– will have a DJ, craft beer and cocktail garden, and a private wagering area.   Tickets are $35, and include Stretch Run admission.

A separate, “After Pony Party” will be held at Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa after the races end, and will include DJs, dancing, food, and drinks.  Tickets begin at $125 and include all-you-can-eat tastings starting at 6pm.

So prepare for Wednesday or for later this year– tracks are open until September 2nd!
