Explosions in Lido Injure Four, Cause Peninsula Blackout

Multiple reports of an underground transformer explosion in Lido Village came rolling in at about 3:20pm on Monday afternoon, causing a power outage that affected the seaside half of Balboa Peninsula (the Bayside miraculously remained on).  During the explosion, some reports indicated that flames were shooting higher than some of the buildings, which would be consistent with the stock photo, above.

Three fire trucks and several police cars sealed the area after evacuating tenants from the buildings out of concern of the threat spreading further.

As one eyewitness said: “Explosions on Via Oporto 4 construction workers hurt, everyone evacuated electrical fires under the street our office lights exploded we are directly on the street – felt like I was in a bad movie! Ran like hell in my heels!”

Power was restored at approximately 4pm.
