A fun, educational, and free adventure for the family! This Friday, step back in time to the days of Tallships when Newport’s own “Pilgrim of Newport” returns to her port of origin here in Newport Beach.
Tallships are works of Oak, Fir, and Pine– and are built for sheer power and strength. Their speed and ability to carry cargo was unmatched in their heyday, and even with only few hundred of them still around in the world, their tradition lives on with us even today. Needless to say, taking years to build, there are very few people who still make them. One of those people was Newport’s very own Dennis Holland (1945 – 2014). Dennis worked on the Pilgrim for 13 years, and launched it in November 19, 1983 out of Lido Shipyard.
Dennis operated it as a charter from Long Beach for nearly 20 years, it was purchased in 1997 and renamed in 2001 to the “Spirit of Dana Point”, where it currently resides.
While we ship cargo by other means now, and have smaller, less expensive boats as pleasure craft, we will have the rare opportunity to see not just a tall ship– but one made Newport’s own legendary shipwright Dennis Holland. The Spirit of Dana Point will be returning to its birthplace in Newport Harbor at noon on Friday. The ship will be open to the public for free, located at 1931 West Coast Highway in Newport, from noon-6pm on Friday, and from 10am-6pm on Saturday.
