92 Year Old Man hit in Crosswalk

Last night at about 6:40pm, a 92 year old man was crossing on 7th and Balboa on Balboa Peninsula, and was struck by a car who was unable to see him.  He suffered “major injuries” in the wreck, according to Newport Beach Police Information Officer, Jennifer Manzella.  The driver of the car was not injured.

This could have been prevented with something both simple and inexpensive: blinking crosswalks.

In August of this year, resident Jennifer Parks requested my help with setting up an online signature collection tool for exactly this purpose (http://savenewport.com/crosswalks).  For years, residents have been asking for blinking crosswalks but have been given the cold shoulder and a shlew of barely sensible answers by the City of Newport Beach about why it couldn’t happen.  If the city were to pay for putting in a blinking crosswalk at major crossing points, it would be cheaper than the single, atrocious roadsign that is going to be put up near Balboa Peninsula that simply says “Welcome to Balboa Village”.  In fact, if they wanted to get really crazy, they could put blinking crosswalks on every single crosswalk on the entire peninsula for less money than that roadsign will cost taxpayers.

Pedestrians and people on bikes being run down by cars is a huge and persistent problem in Newport Beach– we had a death this season last year towards the beginning of the peninsula, and many personal friends of mine have been run into by cars– one quite seriously.

After the August petition launch, the City of Newport suddenly took an interest in researching the subject, but they are still trying to decide what the community thinks.  If you believe that this will help save lives, simply sign the petition below and we will let the city know.

Blinking Crosswalk Petition

Our previous council may have spent $220k on bunnies, but our newly elected council has decided it's wise to spend more than a quarter-million dollars on a sign that says "Welcome to Balboa Village, Home of the Fun Zone", as though anyone was wondering where they were when they travelled 2.4 miles down Balboa Blvd with no other exits in sight. For this amount of money, we could have outfitted all of the major crosswalks on the entire peninsula with flashing crosswalks. Do you think this would be a better spend of your money? If so, sign below!
