Tonight is the last “big night” to see the Perseid Meteor Showers.
August 9-13 are the peak nights to watch the Perseid meteor shower (but tonight is really “the big night”!). The moon will come out at 6:08pm and will set at 4:24am, so it will cause some light pollution, but our prospects for clear weather are good, so we should be getting a very clear view, too, according to the ClearSkyChart.
You can best view the Perseids by looking towards the Persues constellation, at a direction of Northeast around the time of midnight.
Maximum meteors: around 100-200 meteors per hour.
Velocity 35 miles/sec
When: As usual: The best time to see ANY meteor shower is the hour or two before dawn. Try between midnight-2am for some great results without losing *too* much sleep! You may also be able to catch some of these beforehand as spectacular “Earth Grazers”, beginning at about 9pm PST.
You can always keep an eye on the status of the clear skies by visiting this page over at ClearDarkSky: http://www.cleardarksky.com/c/LgnBchCAkey.html?1
Where: If you can, get as high up as possible to sit above the light and air pollution to get the best sights. I personally prefer Top Of The World in Laguna Beach.
Editor’s note: If you snap a great picture of the meteor shower– please send it in!
