California’s Marijuana Initiative is Very Deceiving

The truth about PROPOSITION 64: MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION

If you’re in California and you hate pot, you’re probably considering to vote NO on Prop64.   Don’t do it.
If you’re in California and you like pot, you’re probably considering to vote YES on Prop64.   Don’t do it.

The truth is that regardless of your position: You’re likely to make a mistake on this ballot measure.

The “legalization of marijuana” actually has some really deceiving text in the actual initiative, the details of which you can read here: https://ballotpedia.org/California_Proposition_64,_Marijuana_Legalization_(2016)

Here’s how the bill will alter the status quo:

Current Proposed
Who can use it? Anyone with a doctors recommendation, costing as low as $35/year Anyone over 21
Who can sell it? Anyone who has a doctors recommendation Only those approved by the Yet-to-be-created position of a de facto California Marijuana Czar.  If history is any guide, the people who get licenses will be the ones who send brown bags of cash to a bureaucrat in Sacramento.
How much will it cost? Current market prices are about $300/oz $9.25+15%/oz — estimates that the additional costs would send the per-oz price of pot soaring to at least $400/oz (plus sales tax– not included today), with $54 of those dollars being in special taxes and another $46 dollars being overhead costs for additional regulations, paperwork filing, inspections, etc.

NOTE: Aside from state taxes, local taxes are also authorized, which would inflate this cost even more.

The bottom line is this legislation does the opposite of what its title says.
If you want marijuana to be LESS accessible and MORE expensive, vote YES on legalization.
If you want marijuana to be MORE accessible and LESS expensive, vote NO on legalization.
