As Summer Officially Departs, Locals Celebrate A Quiet Beachtown (and parking!)

Summertime provides our beach city with endless amounts of income for our small businesses, tons of joy for those who visit our beautiful harbor and oceanfront, and endless hours of traffic and searching for parking for our locals.  In a city whose year-round average temperature is just a tad under 70 degrees, our summertime-weather still has a few months to go… but don’t tell anyone, as many locals refer to the next few months as their “Secret Summer”.

When I first arrived in Newport from Oregon more than a decade ago, I found it hilarious that everyone referred to all non-summer months as “winter”– Fall and Spring need not apply!  But remember that our local businesses can only survive our winter months with our contributions, so pick up a sandwich at the nearby sandwich shop, a coffee at the local store, or your groceries at market where your shopping makes a real difference.

Check in with your local haunts in tourist areas, as the Tuesday evening after Labor Day is oftentime a celebration for a “Secret Summer” kickoff, and places are filled with neighbors and locals who spent the summertime avoiding the building so they did not need to wade through a sea of tourists to get a burger, a beer, or the worlds best coffee.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped our tourists find their destinations, assisted them on their 16th attempt at parallel parking, and managed to keep your cool when parking 6 blocks away from home on a Friday afternoon.  We’ve got our parking back now, and I intend to celebrate by purchasing groceries at 7pm on Friday and not thinking twice about it– and participating in some good ole fashioned BBQs with friends.

Enjoy!!!
