Last Friday, Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel joined with California Assemblyman Matt Harper to voice their support of our Dog Beach. To say that this took effort would be an understatement, as the litany of governmental roadblocks is well… let’s just say there’s a reason UPS’s slogan isn’t “Moving at the Speed of Government”!
But to her credit, as soon as we spoke to the right people, she realized what we had at stake and her office jumped all over it. Friday at 10:30am, Michelle Steel proposed a plan for the office of the Orange County Board of Supervisors to officially legalize Dog Beach on the county’s land!
What’s that mean? Well, it means that our halfway point in this battle is finally– after 6 months– within sight. The meeting is set to be Tuesday, April 26th, at 9:30am. The location will be at the “Hall of Administration” at 333 W. Santa Ana Blvd in Santa Ana.
Also invited and joining Supervisor Michelle Steel and Assemblyman Matt Harper were our city manager and our council people Ed Selich, Scott Peotter (who also sported a Save Dog Beach hat!), and Keith Curry, all of who have longtime been rumored to support Dog Beach.
Our current mayor Diane Dixon who presented the proposal to dismantle Dog Beach to begin with was also in attendance, and of course, proclaimed victory, telling the Daily Pilot that it was a “win-win” and “a way to meet residents’ needs and the needs of our four-legged friends” (this is after saying “I love dogs but they should not be allowed to run unleashed on the beach” on December 10, 2015, and “I love dogs, as long as they are on-leash” on September 22, 2015.)
SO WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN?
1) It means we need to show up at the meeting on the 26th (don’t worry, I’ll remind you closer to the date, too).
2) It means if the measure passes first reading on the 26th, it will come to a vote on May 10th, and then be officially law.
3) However, it means that Dog Beach is only legal in the COUNTY area, and that it is still illegal to take your dog through Newport Property to get there (so unless you have a helicopter, we’ve all still got a major problem). Here’s a map of the land:
4) We will need to rally our city council to legalize a method of access to Dog Beach (preferably by legalizing off-leash dogs to Olive Street). This will allow us all to legally access the County-Side of Dog Beach and also not waste time with officers being called to ticket or “catch” a dog that has run a bit outside of the zone. We have only THREE animal control officers and a huge coyote problem. They should not be tied up playing dog catcher at the beach where everyone is simply having a good time!
HOW TO TAKE ACTION:
1) Email the County Supervisors
(Michelle Steel isn’t listed here because she definitely knows where we are coming from now!)
2) Email the City Council: citycouncil@newportbeachca.gov
3) Email the local Papers:

4) ATTEND the meeting! Tuesday, April 26th, at 9:30am. @ “Hall of Administration” 333 W. Santa Ana Blvd in Santa Ana.
Thank you to everyone for your involvement so far– we are almost there… just two (MAYBE three) more meetings before we create an amenity for future generations to use and enjoy. You are awesome!! Thank you for being a part of this amazing movement with such outstanding people!!
We have spent thousands of hours and countless amounts of money getting this done. It is never an easy task fighting city hall. But Dog Beach is more than just a beach for dogs. It’s a little slice of freedom… and that’s worth fighting for.
