BREAKING: Will O’Neill, Newport Beach Finance Commissioner, has filed to run for City Council in District 7. His intent is to run against Fred Ameri.
After appointing O’Neill to the Newport Beach Finance Committee, Councilman Duffy Duffield said, “Will is a fiscal conservative with a keen ability to analyze complex issues and develop common-‐sense solutions. I’m impressed that he already helped create a plan that saves Newport’s taxpayers $1 million by revamping the city’s vehicle replacement program.”
He is married to Jenny O’Neill, they have two children, Aubrey, age 3, and Sean, age 1.
“Jenny and I chose to raise our family in Newport Beach because of the quality of life, safety, and good schools. I look forward to serving my community with enthusiasm and commitment,” concluded O’Neill.
I have met Will on several occasions and he is unique in a fashion that he does not want to put government everywhere. He told me that he is running, in fact, to keep government the same size or– preferably– to get it out of our lives even more.

It is my hope that he can bring balance to a council who– just Tuesday– legalized roving automated license plate scanners in Newport Beach. These license plate scanners will report back in real-time– reading all license plates– to a centralized government-run database to “manage parking”. No doubt, that is just a fraction of what they will wind up doing with this information. This is a prime example of why we need small, uncorruptable government officials. It will be good to see how Will O’Neill shakes out. We will be sending candidate surveys to all candidates within the next week– stay tuned!
