Car Flips into Oncoming Traffic by Marina Park

Last night a city meeting was held at Marina Park.  As it wrapped up, I met a friend on his boat at Woody’s to discuss some of his work.  As we were talking at about 9:45pm, we heard a screech and five slams that sounded like they happened on the road just ahead, but when we went to check there was nothing.  As many people know who have lived and played on the bay, sound travels perfectly over the water, and the crash we heard was actually a half-mile away, at Marina Park.  Both of us thought noise this was another instance of a multiple-car sideswipe.   It turns out that the car actually flipped into oncoming traffic and smashed into a truck parked on the far opposite side of the street.

Witnesses say they heard brakes, then a passenger loudly scream, and then the car began flipping– a horrifying thought.

The car was likely going in excess of 70mph when it drifted out of its lane and into the median-side street parking.  As they hit the curb, the car lost control, weaved back and forth a few times, hit the median and flipped, taking out a Marina Park sign in the median before continuing its roll across Wedge-bound traffic and finally ending up on the sidewalk after crashing into a truck parked on the oceanside street parking.

Within seconds, the NBPD helicopter had a spotlight on it and NBFD and PD began arriving just moments later.  Amazingly, both passengers removed themselves from the vehicle on their own strength, and both were put into individual ambulances and taken off-scene.

Most of the witnesses said that the person was acting very intoxicated, so this may be an instance of drunk driving.

This is a good time to remind everyone not to drink and drive.  Here is a list of services in Newport that offer rides:
