I am Running for Council

As you may have read in the papers this week, I have decided to run for council.

Over the course of the last few years our local city council has pushed attempts to strip property rights from our historic businesses, proposed abolishing our fire rings, raised our taxes, increased spending, inflated our pension costs, and now is even attempting to shut down our beloved Dog Beach.

Throughout these events and due to my activism in the city, many people have asked me to run for Council.

In the past, I have dismissed it, saying “I am a businessman, I don’t have time to do something like that”– but the reality I discovered over time is that I expend far more effort fighting bad council proposals from the outside than I would be spending at the dais explaining why they are incorrect and simply preventing them from occurring in the first place– these things should have NEVER made it to public discussion, let alone passed.

For that reason– and at the encouragement from the community as a whole– I have decided to run.  I anticipate that this will be a hard race to win.  I will certainly be facing someone who can raise substantial amounts of money, and in fact, has already raised over $16k for his election as of the end of last year.  Last election cycle, some candidates raised over five times that amount.

I ask for your support, your contributions, and your vote.  During the first part of this campaign, fundraising is the most important.  Not only the total amount of money which will obviously help communicate the message through mailers and ad buys– but each individual contribution will show “the news” how much support we have as a potential elected by showing how many *individual* contributions received.

Every single dollar makes a difference.  If you can, please donate a few.  It will not simply help my campaign– it will help me to bring the fight to city council– where we can stop these seemingly endless amounts of bad ideas before they even materialize.

Thank you for your support and your continued fight to keep our city the amazing gem that it is.

I hate asking for money, but I guess this is when I need to go ahead and give the plug for it: Donations to the campaign can be made here: http://savenewport.com/donate

Thank you so much for your support!
