Tuesday’s Election Results

The California State Senator position was open for election after the incumbent won a seat in the US Congress.  Three people were contending for the seat along with one write-in candidate.  Of the four, one was very well funded, and one had massive Name-ID due to his fantastic actions in politics in the past.

Don Wagner raised about $400,000 for his campaign.  Wagner is an assemblyman.

Moorlach raised about a quarter as much, mostly because he despises asking people for money.  As a certified public accountant, Moorlach was the first person to predict the bankruptcy of Orange County, and everyone called him Chicken Little.  Then OC went backrupt.  Then Moorlach stepped in and fixed the problems.  An outstanding man, and the only thing you could honest criticize about him is the fact that after OC went bankrupt and he cleaned it up, he got a custom license plate that said “SKYFELL”, an homage to the Chicken Little story, and also touting his vindication, despite all the “political class” previously mocking him.

That resentment by the political class of being proved wrong reared its ugly head again in this election.  Detractors lined up behind Wagner, flooding him with both direct money and independent expenditures (known in the political world as simply “IEs”).  Mailers flooded our inboxes, none of them touting what either man had done, and all flashing unrepentant lies about Moorlach.

When the polls closed last night, though, it was clear that despite being outspent four-to-one, Moorlachs good deeds and good name preceded him, and he pulled through with over 50%, thus avoiding a run-off election between the top-two candidates.  John Moorlach is our new state senator.

There are zero CPAs in the State Senate, and we hope and expect that Moorlach’s voice will shine through and bring some common sense into the legislative body.

As a recap of people representing Newport Beach who are outside of our city itself, we have:
US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher
California State Senator John Moorlach
California State Assemblyman Matt Harper
