Brad Avery Files for Council Bid

An eventful week last week!  Brad Avery, Newport Beach Harbor Commissioner, filed his papers to run in District 2.

District 2 is a seat currently occupied by Tony Petros, but Petros made a surprising announcement two weeks ago that he was not going to run for election again so that he could concentrate on his family.  Petros had an opponent for his seat, Shelley Henderson.  Henderson is a newcomer to Newport from Inglewood, and has also been doing her fundraisers and promotions in Inglewood– a tactic that I have literally never heard of before.  I called Henderson when she first filed to run, and I am enthusiastic that Avery has decided to run, even with his disappointing selection of  the notorious campaign consultant Dave Ellis.

Of the three seats up for election (in alphabetical order), we have:

DISTRICT 2 (office held by Tony Petros, not running again):
Brad Avery- Longtime community leader and activist. (campaign consultant: Dave Ellis)
Shelley Henderson- Law student. (campaign consultant: unknown)

DISTRICT 5 (office held by Ed Selich, termed out):
Mike Glenn- (that’s me!) Longtime businessman, activist, and officeholder in various community groups. (campaign consultant: none)
Jeff Herdman- Longtime resident and former president of the Balboa Island Improvement Association. (campaign consultant: unknown)
Lee Lowrey- Land developer and fundraiser for politicians. (campaign consultant: Dave Ellis)

DISTRICT 7 (office held by Keith Curry, termed out):
Fred Ameri- Longtime Newport resident and fundraiser for politicians, held positions on various local boards. (campaign consultant: unknown)
Phil Greer- Longtime Newport resident and lawyer for both politicians and businesses, husband of Arlene Greer who sits on the Arts Commission. (campaign consultant: unknown)
Will O’Neill- Lawyer, has held a seat on the Newport Beach Finance Committee since he moved to Newport as a new resident about 2-3 years ago. (campaign consultant: Dave Ellis)

Newport Beach is somewhat unique in that you vote on ALL districts.  So pick your favorite candidate in each one and go with it!  I will be releasing my picks towards the close of the election cycle.
