Bicyclist Struck on Crosswalk by 7/11 on Balboa Peninsula

Early this morning, a bicyclist riding a red beach cruiser was struck while crossing the street on 20th near the 7/11.

Early reports indicate that the rider was dead at the scene. [EDIT: Contrary to early reports, the rider was not killed]

This is not the first time that someone has been killed on our roadways; just last year someone was crossing near the 30th Street crosswalk and was struck and killed by a driver.  Countless others are injured and remain unnamed.

SaveNewport member Jennifer Park tried to raise attention to the fact that the peninsula has just one blinking crosswalk on August 31st of 2016, but the city has taken no substantial action on it so far.  I personally know several people who have sustained substantial and life-threatening injuries while walking inside of the crosswalks.  If you would like to sign the petition for blinking crosswalks, please do so here: http://savenewport.com/crosswalks/

If you would like to write city council and voice your concerns with the continued injuries and deaths happening in the Peninsula crosswalk areas with no action by our government, please write them at citycouncil@newportbeachca.gov.

We cannot allow inaction to be the decision when people are dying and Councilwoman Dixon is busy spending $260,000 on road signs (more than enough to cover the entire peninsula in blinking crosswalks).

Please, sign the petition and email your representative.

This is not “my opinion”.  Lives are on the line.  It’s time to take a stand.
