Huge Dog Beach Announcement Scheduled for Tomorrow

Let me let you in on a little secret: Dog Beach is gonna have a hearing on the County level… soon!

As many of you know, Dog Beach is the area between Newport and Huntington at the Santa Ana River jetties.  Dogs roam freely there and play in the water, surf, or just play fetch for as far as the arm can throw.  To call it a bit of a gem would be possibly the biggest understatement I’ve made.  It’s awesome, and everyone there considers it a slice of paradise.

Last year, Mayor Diane Dixon floated an idea which would have destroyed Dog Beach. Since then, we have seen vote tallies mysteriously altered in favor of the elimination of Dog Beach, we’ve seen exceptionally misleading data about “adjacent” dog problems (apparently adjacent to a 300ft beach is the 6,000ft next to it), and we’ve even seen the meeting minutes from the Parks, Beach, and Recreation meeting be altered to eliminate the suggestion of expanding Dog Beach so that citizens could legally access it… but the tides at that beach are changing.

Tomorrow, we will have good news coming (yes– good news even on Tax Day!).  Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel will be holding a press conference at 10:30am Friday morning to announce a vote by the Orange County Supervisors to make Dog Beach a codified legal entity, giving us back about half of what the city was trying to take from us.

We will need to rally at this OC Supervisor meeting to show the kind of support we have, as there will doubtlessly be the people who want to privatize the beach who will also be there to object.   The meeting tomorrow will be filled with press, so if you are able to make it at 10:30am, that would be fantastic– but the real meeting won’t be until the 26th of this month for the OC Supervisors vote (I’ll update you on the details there in the near future).

Assuming the law passes on the 26th, though, we will still need to continue our efforts with Newport Beach, because unless you have a private helicopter, you will be legally unable to access Dog Beach without bringing your beloved puppy through Newport Beach land… illegally.  We’ll work on that behind the scenes– but for tomorrow, if you are able to come in the morning at 10:30am, I will see you there.  If not, we will definitely need your presence on the 26th.

Again, there are two dates:
1) Tomorrow, Friday, at 10:30am (don’t skip work, but if you are able to make it, great!) – press release with Michelle Steel @ Dog Beach
2) Tuesday the 26th for the vote at OC Supervisors (I will update with the details on this as the date gets closer)

For now, let’s celebrate a tremendous breakthrough on the county level!

SAVE DOG BEACH!

Do not ban off-leash dogs at dog beach!!! Regulars at Dog Beach know that off-leash dogs are not problematic. If, there are some which are, then address the problem dogs.
If there are problems with waste, address those who create those problems.

The public OVERWHELMINGLY supports keeping DOG BEACH a place for DOGS. Newport Beach has some of the longest coastline in Southern California and Dog Beach only accounts for roughly 100 yards. Let dogs have their small stretch of beach.

KEEP DOG BEACH THE WAY IT IS!
