Shores for 17 years and my young kids are afraid to walk near the river jetties
because of all the off-leash dogs, and they do not stay confined to the area
between the jetties. We have been charged by dogs so many times that we don't
go near. We are pet owners and don't dislike dogs, just irresponsible dog owners.
Not picking up poop happens on the newport side as well and as the tide changes
that fecal matter goes into the canal around newport shores, sensitve wildlife

so cavalier about the effect this has on health and safety. The county is shirking
it's obligation to actively address this issue and I'm pleased that the city may take
this on. My suggestions are:
1. Post sandwich-board signs at the jetty and access points letting dog owners
know the rules;

2. Have animal control aggressively enforce the law for those who venture into
Newport with a dog;
3. Encourage the county to also post signs and to have a county animal control
officer spend a few weekends writing tickets.
