DUI Checks, Massive Surf, Torrential Rain, and Huge Winds this Weekend!

Holy cow what a headline!  Let’s itemize all this stuff!

1) DUI CHECKPOINTS ON FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY, MONDAY: The Newport Beach Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting roving DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at undisclosed locations in Newport between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.  DUI Checkpoints are claimed to reduce drunk driving mostly by deterrent, but also serve to actively arrest those who are driving under the influence.  They also cause significant traffic delays, so if you are in a rush, be aware!

This is a good time remind everyone that when you drink, please call a taxi or use Uber, Lyft, or another service to ensure that you and others make it home safely!

Checkpoints generally consist of about 30 officers, according to historic averages.  These officers spend 8 hours for a full days work between 6pm and 2am.  The pool of your tax dollars that fund this effort are from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

New users of Uber can use my code of “Uber4Newport” and it will pay for the first $15 of your fare.  You can download Uber here: https://get.uber.com/invite/uber4newport
New users of Lyft can use my code of “SAVENEWPORT” and it will pay for the first $50 of your fare.  You can download Lyft here: https://www.lyft.com/invited/SAVENEWPORT
You can call a Yellow Cab OC, at 714-999-9999 (MAKE NOTE: 18004mytaxi is no longer working)

2) SURF: Ooooh, the waves.  Huge 10ft-to-12ft waves with sets as high as 15ft will be pounding our shores late Friday at 9pm until early morning Sunday.

3) RAIN: A massive storm coming in will drop nearly 3 inches of rain on Friday alone!  Remember those two big days of storms we had just a few weeks ago?  Those dumped about two inches– combined.  Friday we’ll be getting three inches.  It’ll be an all-day pour, so it will be pretty distributed throughout the day, but if you don’t have an umbrella… you may want to grab one.

4) WIND: But don’t let it get turned inside out, because adding to the madness is going to be sustained winds of 30mph, with gusts likely double that.

5) BONUS: To top off our huge storms, our temperature will drop to 59 degrees (it was 70 yesterday!)

The National Weather Service has already issued a statement warning of winds, rains, surf, riptides, minor tidal overflow, and possible lightning.

So grab your poncho and get ready for some fun, because the next two days will make all those who say “Newport never gets weather” eat their words– and if you’re drinking, always remember to catch a ride home and don’t drive yourself!  ENJOY THE UPCOMING WEEKEND!
