Don’t Forget: “Fall Back” Sunday!

Remember that Sunday morning we set our clocks BACK by one hour, so that 1:59am happens twice in one day.

Daylight savings has to do with energy savings, particularly in old factories.  By slightly adjusting the clock to account for the changes in the sunrise and sunset times, employers were able to save money on heating and electricity.  Sorry, “Simpsons” fans: it has nothing to do with “stupid farmers”.

Remember, this Sunday on November 6st, “Fall Back” your clocks one hour.  This is the time change that we all love, because it gives us an extra hour of sleep!

With all the internet-linked clocks and watches, I don’t know that we’ll need to remember to do this for much longer.  I will only need to reset my oven and microwave, as my clocks, watch, and phone all link to the internet and take care of it for me.  Which items are you still manually resetting?

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE
This won’t be the last time-change in 2016.  We’re also going to be adding a leap-second— so stay tuned for 11:59pm on December 31st– it’s going to be one second longer than normal.
This happens because we have atomic time (which measures tiny vibrations in atoms for its time-keeping) and global time (the actual time it takes earth to rotate in a 24-hour period).  As earth slows down by about a second every year, we add an additional second most years either on Dec31st or Jun30th.  In fact, since 1972, we have added an additional 27 seconds to our atomic time clocks, including two seconds in the very first year we began measuring it.  So wait until new years to celebrate this astronomical event, and use the time to take another schwig of champagne!

For now, though– just set your clocks back an hour on Sunday night! 🙂
