Lifeguard Ben Carlson’s 1-year Memorial

Last night, a word-of-mouth memorial was held for Ben Carlson on the anniversary of his final rescue. Ben passed on July 6th, 2014 while on-duty in some of the roughest waters that I’ve ever seen in Newport.

Hundreds of Ben’s family, friends, lifeguards, and local officials all gathered by Newport Pier in remembrance of Ben and of his sacrifice. Bens family spoke very moving words, and people moved along to some of the local favorite spots afterwards to share a few beers and a few memories.

Here are a few more photos from the event, which began at the foot of the pier, moved on to the pier, and then dissipated back out into Newport.  It was a great but solemn time for all.  Ben did go.
